Privacy Policy

Last updated: May 3, 2026

1. Summary

Road Sorties ("the Service") is designed to be privacy-respecting. We do not require an account, we do not collect personal information, and we do not store your location data. This policy explains exactly what data is and isn't handled when you use the Service.

2. Information We Do Not Collect

  • We do not require user accounts, email addresses, names, or passwords.
  • We do not store your location, GPS coordinates, or browsing history.
  • We do not use third-party advertising networks or behavioral tracking pixels.
  • We do not sell, rent, or share personal data with third parties for marketing purposes.
  • We do not build user profiles or correlate activity across sessions.

3. Information Processed in Transit

To generate routes and search for places, the Service must transmit certain data to our servers and to third-party providers:

  • Route waypoints: The start, end, and intermediate points you select are sent to our routing service to compute directions. These coordinates are processed in memory and are not stored or associated with you.
  • Place searches: Search queries are forwarded to a geocoding provider (such as Nominatim/OpenStreetMap) to return matching results. We do not retain these queries.
  • Map tiles: Standard HTTP requests for map tiles include your IP address as part of normal internet operation. These requests may be logged briefly by hosting infrastructure for security and abuse prevention, then discarded.

4. Browser Storage

The Service may store small amounts of data locally in your browser (for example, in localStorage) to remember preferences such as map style or whether you've granted location permission. This data lives on your device, is not transmitted to us, and can be cleared at any time through your browser settings.

5. Shared Route Links

If you choose to generate a shareable link to a planned route, the route's waypoints and configuration are stored on our servers so that anyone with the link can view the route. These shared records contain no personal information about you and automatically expire. Do not include personal information in route names or notes if you intend to share the link.

6. Cookies and Analytics

The Service does not set tracking cookies. We do not use Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel, or any third-party behavioral analytics. Standard server logs may record aggregated, non-personal request metadata (such as response codes and request volumes) for the purpose of operating and securing the Service.

7. Third-Party Data Sources

The Service relies on third-party services including OpenStreetMap, Nominatim, Valhalla, and similar map and routing providers. When the Service queries these providers on your behalf, those providers may log the request according to their own policies. We have no control over and assume no responsibility for the privacy practices of third-party services.

8. Children's Privacy

The Service is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from children. If you believe a child has provided information through the Service, please contact us so we can take appropriate action.

9. Security

We use industry-standard transport encryption (HTTPS) for traffic between your device and our servers. However, no method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

10. Your Choices

  • You can use the Service without granting location permission; however, certain features (such as centering the map on your position) will be unavailable.
  • You can clear browser storage at any time through your browser's settings.
  • Because we do not maintain user accounts, there is no profile to delete.

11. California Privacy Rights (CCPA/CPRA)

If you are a California resident, the California Consumer Privacy Act ("CCPA"), as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act ("CPRA"), provides you with specific rights regarding your personal information. Because the Service does not require an account and does not collect personal information about identified or identifiable individuals, in most cases we have no personal information to provide, correct, or delete. For completeness:

  • Categories of personal information collected: None used to identify or profile you. The Service may transiently process IP address (a CCPA-defined identifier) and approximate location derived from route waypoints solely to deliver the Service, and these are not retained in a form linked to you.
  • Sale or sharing of personal information: We do not sell or "share" (as defined under CPRA, including for cross-context behavioral advertising) personal information. We have not done so in the preceding twelve (12) months.
  • Sensitive personal information: We do not collect or use sensitive personal information for purposes that would trigger the right to limit its use.
  • Right to know, delete, correct, and limit: To exercise these rights, contact us via the contact page. We will respond as required by law. We will not discriminate against you for exercising your rights.
  • Authorized agents: You may designate an authorized agent to make a request on your behalf. We may require the agent to provide proof of authorization and may verify your identity directly.
  • "Shine the Light" (Cal. Civ. Code § 1798.83): We do not share personal information with third parties for their direct marketing purposes.
  • Do Not Track: Because we do not track users across services, our Service does not respond differently to "Do Not Track" or Global Privacy Control signals — we treat all users the same.

12. International Users

The Service may be accessed from anywhere in the world. By using the Service, you acknowledge that any data processed in transit (such as route waypoints) may be handled on servers located in countries other than your own.

13. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page will reflect the most recent revision. Continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
