Alabama's Barbour County Governor's Trail runs about 36 miles from Clio through Louisville and Clayton to Eufaula, tracing the home county of six Alabama governors. The Alabama Legislature designated the route in 2000 to honor John Gill Shorter, William Dorsey Jelks, Braxton Bragg Comer, Chauncey Sparks, and both George and Lurleen Wallace, all Barbour County natives who served as governor between the Civil War and the 1980s. The drive ends at Eufaula's Shorter Mansion, an 1884 Neo-Classical Revival house museum and one of more than 700 historic structures in the Seth Lore/Irwinton Historic District, and passes the Octagon House, used as Union headquarters during Reconstruction. Along the way it also gives access to Blue Springs State Park and Lake Eufaula, adding recreation to the political history. It's a byway built almost entirely around a single, unusual claim to fame: one rural county producing an outsized share of a state's governors.
