The Haines Highway runs up the Chilkat River valley from the coastal town of Haines into British Columbia and the Yukon, past glaciated peaks and the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve. Each late autumn, thousands of bald eagles gather along the river to feed on a late salmon run — one of the largest concentrations of eagles on earth. The road climbs from rainforest to alpine tundra at Chilkat Pass.
