The northern Sterling Highway leaves the Seward Highway at Tern Lake and crosses the central Kenai Peninsula, following the famous turquoise Kenai River through Cooper Landing. The river and its tributary at the Russian River draw anglers from around the world for some of the most productive salmon and trout fishing in Alaska. The route passes the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge and Skilak Lake.
