Dine' Tah "Among the People" Scenic Road is a roughly 100-mile scenic route through the Navajo Nation in northeastern Arizona, built around Canyon de Chelly National Monument. The byway is really two connected roads: one running from Lupton north through the Navajo Nation capital of Window Rock to the New Mexico border, and another picking up in the Lukachukai Mountains, curving around the north rim of Canyon de Chelly, and ending at Chinle. Along the canyon rim, overlooks including Tsegi, Antelope House, and Mummy Cave look down on Ancestral Puebloan cliff dwellings and rock art built into the canyon walls centuries ago. One overlook, Massacre Cave, marks a somber chapter of Navajo history, where Spanish soldiers killed a group of Navajo women and children hiding in the canyon. Between the canyon segments, the route crosses rugged high desert punctuated by pine-topped mountain ranges, giving the drive a mix of Navajo cultural sites and genuinely dramatic canyon-country scenery.
