US-163 runs north from Kayenta across the Navajo Nation toward the towering sandstone buttes and mesas of Monument Valley on the Utah line. The view of the road running dead-straight toward the buttes is among the most iconic images of the American West, instantly recognizable from films and the closing run of "Forrest Gump." The valley itself is a Navajo tribal park.
