State Route 89A climbs over Mingus Mountain in the Black Hills between the Verde Valley and Prescott, switchbacking up to nearly 7,000 feet. Clinging to the mountainside on the way up is Jerome, a former copper boomtown that nearly became a ghost town and is now an artists' colony famous for its precipitous streets. The summit offers a wide view across the Verde Valley to the red rocks of Sedona and the San Francisco Peaks.
