Organ Pipe Cactus Parkway is a 25-mile Arizona state byway connecting the town of Ajo to Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument near the U.S.-Mexico border. It's one of only four roads in Arizona carrying the state's "parkway" designation, a category reserved for scenic or historic corridors with controlled access, a minimum mile between intersections, and room for visitor facilities and interpretive pullouts along the way. The road leads into the monument President Franklin D. Roosevelt established in 1937 to protect one of the few places in the country where organ pipe cactus grows wild alongside saguaro, both towering over a landscape of volcanic hills and desert washes. UNESCO named the monument a Biosphere Reserve in 1976, and the following year the federal government designated 95 percent of it as protected wilderness, cementing its status as one of the most ecologically significant stretches of the Sonoran Desert. The parkway itself is a straightforward desert approach road, but it delivers travelers directly into some of the densest and least-disturbed cactus forest anywhere in Arizona.
