Arizona's Rim Road, Forest Road 300, runs about 43 miles of well-graded dirt along the Mogollon Rim between State Routes 87 and 260, reached from Payson. The Mogollon Rim itself is a 200-mile escarpment stretching from near the New Mexico border diagonally across Arizona to Sedona, rising some 2,000 feet in a sudden wall of rock and sheltering the world's largest stand of ponderosa pine. About a mile in, FR 300 crosses the historic General Crook Trail, a wagon route the US Army cut through the 1870s and 1880s to supply General George Crook's campaigns against Apache bands, and the road also intersects the modern Arizona National Scenic Trail at several points. Elk and mule deer sightings are common along the drive, which climbs through cool pine forest with sweeping views over the desert below before ending near Woods Canyon Lake.
