US-180 runs northwest from Flagstaff beneath the San Francisco Peaks, the eroded remnant of a volcano whose Humphreys Peak, at 12,633 feet, is the highest point in Arizona. The road crosses high ponderosa and aspen forest that turns brilliant gold in fall and gives access to the Arizona Snowbowl ski area. The peaks are sacred to many Native nations of the region.
