Arizona's Tse'nikani-Flat Mesa Rock Scenic Byway follows US Highway 191 for about 42 miles across the Navajo Nation, from Many Farms north to Mexican Water. Much of the drive runs along the floor of Chinle Wash, passing through four of the Navajo Nation's 110 chapters: Many Farms, Rock Point, Round Rock, and Mexican Water. Red sandstone formations flank the highway for long stretches, including a paired outcrop known as Dancing Rocks, or Whale Rock, among the route's more recognizable landmarks. Arizona designated the corridor a scenic byway in 2005, but the road remains, first and foremost, a working part of the Navajo Nation rather than a tourist route: travelers may see sheep herding and other daily life in progress along the way, and are expected to respect that this is home to Navajo families, not a backdrop, including asking permission before any photography of residents or private land.
