Arkansas' Sylamore Scenic Byway runs 26.5 miles through the Ozark National Forest's Sylamore Ranger District in Stone County. Built as a scenic approach to the popular Blanchard Springs Caverns, the route follows State Highway 5 for 16.5 miles from Calico Rock to Allison, continues on State Highway 14 for another 6.7 miles, then finishes on Forest Service Road 1110 for the final 3 miles to the caverns. Along the way, the road winds past rugged limestone bluffs and cedar glade outcrops, with streams alternating between rushing shoals and calm pools visible from the pavement. History along the corridor includes the Sugarloaf Fire Tower and an adjoining stone house, both built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, and the Mirror Lake Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The drive is as much about the destination as the route itself: Blanchard Springs Caverns, one of the most-visited show caves in the National Forest System, draws most of the traffic that keeps this stretch of Ozark backroad in good repair.
