Arroyo Seco Historic Parkway, California's Route 110, is a National Scenic Byway connecting Los Angeles and Pasadena as one of the oldest freeways in the United States. It opened to traffic on December 30, 1940, with parades and civic proclamations marking the debut of a road built to follow the natural curves of the Arroyo Seco, a seasonal river, rather than cut a straight engineered line, making it a transitional design between the earlier parkway era and the freeways that came after. In 1993 the state legislature designated its original northern stretch, above the Figueroa Street Viaduct, a California Historic Parkway, a status shared with only one other road in the state, San Diego's Cabrillo Freeway. Further recognition followed: a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 1999, National Scenic Byway status in 2002, and a listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011. For decades it carried the name Pasadena Freeway, from 1954 until 2010, when the original Arroyo Seco Parkway name was restored as part of a renovation marking the road's 70th anniversary.
