California's Highway 1 hugs the Pacific edge of the state for hundreds of miles, from the redwood coast in the north past San Francisco to the cliffs of Big Sur and on toward Southern California. Its most celebrated stretch, the Big Sur Coast Highway, is a designated All-American Road where the road clings to cliffs hundreds of feet above the surf, crossing landmarks like Bixby Creek Bridge and passing McWay Falls. It is one of the most famous drives in the world.
