State Route 18 follows the crest of the San Bernardino Mountains high above the Inland Empire, with the lights of the valley spread out far below and the resort lakes of Lake Arrowhead and Big Bear along the way. The road threads pine forest near 7,000 feet, a cool escape from the Southern California lowlands. Its name comes from the dizzying drop off the mountain's edge.
