Scenic Interstate 5

Interstate 5's officially designated scenic segment in California runs from State Route 152 to Interstate 580, through the Central Valley's western farm belt. That's a quieter stretch than the highway's more famous mountain crossing further south. That distinction matters: the dramatic Grapevine, where I-5 climbs over Tejon Pass between Santa Clarita and the San Joaquin Valley, reaches the highest point on Interstate 5 anywhere in California at 4,144 feet and was known for decades as the Ridge Route before the modern freeway replaced it, but Caltrans has never given that segment official scenic highway status. The stretch that does carry the designation instead runs through flat, intensively farmed valley land, framed by the Coast Range to the west and irrigated fields stretching toward the valley floor's center on the east. It's a reminder that "scenic highway" in California is a specific bureaucratic designation tied to defined criteria, not simply a measure of which stretch of road impresses drivers most; plenty of travelers would nominate the Grapevine's steep canyon walls over this quieter agricultural segment, but only the latter carries the official state designation.
