Scenic Interstate 580

Interstate 580's scenic segments run from San Leandro to State Route 24, and from Interstate 5 to Interstate 205, crossing the East Bay hills along a route with its own engineering pedigree. From the MacArthur Maze, the freeway carries the MacArthur Freeway name through Oakland and San Leandro to Castro Valley, a stretch built over or alongside the old right-of-way of US 50 and the historic Lincoln Highway during the late 1960s and early 1970s. In 1966, Parade Magazine gave the Oakland portion of the MacArthur Freeway a special award as the Most Beautiful Urban Highway in the country, recognition that predates its later Caltrans scenic designation. East of the Warren Freeway interchange, I-580 runs near or along the Hayward Fault, a major branch of the San Andreas system, before turning through Dublin Canyon and descending into Dublin and Pleasanton. That eastern segment was rebuilt in the 1990s alongside construction of BART's Blue Line, with the transit tracks placed in a new median between the freeway's east- and west-bound lanes, a rare example of a scenic highway and a rail line sharing the same right-of-way.
