State Scenic Highway 111 covers Route 111 through California's Coachella Valley, the desert highway linking Palm Springs to Palm Desert, Indian Wells, La Quinta, and Indio. Running from Interstate 10 near Whitewater south through the valley floor and on to the Salton Sea's eastern shore, the road threads a string of resort towns against a backdrop of bare desert peaks that rise abruptly from the valley floor, with the San Jacinto range often snow-capped in winter while palm-lined resorts sit in 80-degree warmth below. The route has been placed on California's list of highways eligible for State Scenic Highway status, in recognition of that mountain-desert contrast, but it has not received the corridor protection plan required for official designation. Winter and early spring are the most comfortable seasons to drive it, before valley temperatures climb into triple digits.
