State Scenic Highway 118 is Route 118 through Ventura and Los Angeles counties, a mountain-and-valley drive better known for its freeway stretch than any scenic branding. That freeway section is the Ronald Reagan Freeway between Moorpark and Lake View Terrace, renamed in 1994 for the fortieth president in honor of his presidential library in nearby Simi Valley. West of the freeway, the route continues as a two-lane road through the Santa Susana Mountains and the Simi Valley, passing sandstone rock formations and oak-covered hills before dropping toward Ventura's agricultural flatland. The corridor has been placed on the state's list of routes eligible for scenic-highway status because of these mountain and rock-formation views, but no local jurisdiction along the alignment has adopted the corridor protection plan Caltrans requires for official designation. It remains, for now, a commuter route with scenic stretches rather than a formally protected scenic highway.
