State Scenic Highway 121, the Carneros Highway, crosses the cool-climate Carneros wine region straddling Sonoma and Napa counties. The California Legislature named the route the Carneros Highway from its southern terminus near Highway 37 to its junction with Highway 29 in the city of Napa, a stretch eligible for the state's Scenic Highway System though not yet officially designated. Carneros, Spanish for 'rams,' takes its climate from cooling breezes off San Pablo Bay, making it one of the few spots in Wine Country cool enough to favor Pinot noir, Chardonnay, and sparkling wine over the warmer-climate reds grown further north. More than 20 wineries and roughly 8,000 acres of vineyard line the highway and its side roads, including architecturally striking estates built to take advantage of sweeping views back across the vines toward the bay. Unlike the crowded tasting-room strip of Highway 29 further north, Carneros functions as much as a scenic through-route as a wine destination in its own right.
