State Scenic Highway 125 is a short stretch of Route 125 in San Diego County recognized for passing through a memorable landscape free of visual clutter. The recognized segment runs between State Route 94 near Spring Valley and Interstate 8 near La Mesa, officials having described it as free of visual intrusions like billboards or heavy commercial development. The larger Route 125 corridor runs from Otay Mesa near the Mexican border north to State Route 52 in Santee, but it is only this middle section, through the rolling terrain around Spring Valley and La Mesa, that has been singled out for scenic recognition. As with most of California's eligible-list highways, it still needs a local corridor protection program before Caltrans can grant it full scenic-highway status. For now it functions as a heavily used San Diego County commuter route whose short scenic segment gives drivers a break from the surrounding suburban sprawl.
