State Scenic Highway 128 runs from Cloverdale to the Pacific through Mendocino County's Anderson Valley wine country and redwood forest. From just northwest of Cloverdale, the highway climbs through the Yorkville Highlands before dropping into Anderson Valley at Boonville, an area celebrated for Pinot noir, sparkling wine, and even a solar-powered brewery among its tasting rooms. Past the town of Philo, at the valley's heart, vineyards give way to Hendy Woods State Park and its old-growth redwood groves, and the highway settles alongside the Navarro River for its final eleven miles, a stretch locals call the 'redwood tunnel to the sea.' The road ends at Highway 1 and the Navarro River's mouth, having dropped from inland wine country through increasingly dense coastal forest in a single, continuous descent. Eligible for California's State Scenic Highway System along this stretch, the drive offers one of the more complete cross-sections of Mendocino County's geography in a single route.
