State Scenic Highway 14 runs from Los Angeles into the Mojave Desert, its northern stretch nicknamed the Aerospace Highway for Edwards Air Force Base. The southern section, signed as the Antelope Valley Freeway, carries commuters from Santa Clarita, Palmdale, and Lancaster into the greater Los Angeles area; the first 14.4-mile piece opened in October 1963. North of Palmdale, the highway heads toward Edwards Air Force Base and the Air Force Flight Test Center, home to more than 150 aviation 'first flight' records, including Chuck Yeager's 1947 supersonic flight and the 1981 landing of the Space Shuttle Columbia. Past Mojave, the road opens into stark high-desert scenery, with Joshua trees and distant mountain ranges replacing the suburban sprawl of the valley floor. This desert stretch, from near Mojave to US 395 at Little Lake, is eligible for California's State Scenic Highway System, though it has not yet received official scenic designation.
