State Scenic Highway 15 applies to two separate, unconnected stretches of Interstate 15 in Southern California placed on the state's scenic-eligible list. One is between State Routes 76 and 91 in Riverside County, near Lake Elsinore and Temecula wine country; the other is between State Routes 58 and 127 out in the Mojave Desert north of Barstow, en route toward Death Valley. The Riverside County segment passes rolling hills and vineyards as the interstate climbs toward the Inland Empire, while the Mojave segment crosses open desert basin and range country with long sightlines to distant mountain ranges. Despite the scenic qualities recognized in both segments, neither has received California's official scenic-highway designation, which requires a local corridor protection program limiting development along the route. As a major interstate, traffic volumes are high, especially on the southern segment near the wine country exits.
