State Scenic Highway 158, the June Lake Loop, is a roughly 16-mile horseshoe detour off U.S. 395 in California's Eastern Sierra. Branching north near June Lake and rejoining 395 near Rush Creek in Mono County, the loop drops into a glacially carved valley ringed by jagged Sierra Nevada peaks, stringing together four alpine lakes, June, Gull, Silver, and Grant, along with the small resort community of June Lake itself. Aspen groves along the route turn brilliant gold in fall, drawing photographers from across the state, while summer brings fishing, boating, and hiking into the surrounding Ansel Adams and John Muir wilderness areas. The loop has been recognized as eligible for California's State Scenic Highway System because of its exceptional natural beauty, though it has not received official designation, which would require a local corridor protection plan. Winter access can be limited by snow at the higher points of the loop.
