State Scenic Highway 198 climbs from California's Central Valley to the boundary of Sequoia National Park, where it becomes the Generals Highway. The highway begins at US 101 near San Lucas in Monterey County and runs some 141 miles east across farmland and foothills before entering the forested Sierra Nevada near Three Rivers, ending at the park boundary close to Lake Kaweah. Inside the park, the road continues as the Generals Highway, connecting Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks and giving the whole corridor its name. Though the segment east of Route 99 has long been considered scenic enough to qualify, it remains merely eligible for California's State Scenic Highway System and has not received official designation, unlike some of the giant sequoia groves it leads to. The drive shifts dramatically along the way, from irrigated valley farmland through oak-studded foothills to the towering conifers near the park entrance, a preview of the far larger trees waiting just past the boundary.
