State Scenic Highway 203 is a short Mono County spur connecting U.S. 395 to Mammoth Lakes and the gateway for Devils Postpile National Monument. The road climbs from the high-desert valley floor near 395 into the Mammoth Lakes basin, passing the base of Mammoth Mountain, one of California's largest ski resorts, before reaching Minaret Summit, roughly seven miles from Devils Postpile, with sweeping views of the Ritter Range and Minarets. Route 203 is designated an official interregional route under state law and sits on California's list of highways eligible for scenic-highway status, though it has not received the additional formal designation that would require a local corridor protection plan. Summer traffic is dominated by hikers and campers headed for the shuttle to Devils Postpile and Rainbow Falls, while winter turns the corridor into the main access road for Mammoth Mountain skiers.
