State Scenic Highway 27 follows Topanga Canyon Boulevard across the Santa Monica Mountains in Los Angeles County. A 3.5-mile stretch, from Pacific Coast Highway at Topanga State Beach north through Topanga Canyon, was officially designated a state scenic highway in March 2017. It's one of only a handful of roads that cross the Santa Monica Mountains at all, winding past sandstone outcrops and oak woodland between the coast and the San Fernando Valley. Beyond the designated segment, SR 27 continues north through Woodland Hills, Canoga Park, and Chatsworth to State Route 118, carrying heavy commuter traffic that has little to do with its scenic canyon origins. Topanga itself, the small community at the canyon's heart, has long been known as an artists' enclave.
