State Scenic Highway 299, the Trinity Scenic Byway, was designated in 1991 to celebrate the drive 'from the Valley Oaks to the Redwood Coast.' The theme, chosen by the Forest Service, reflects the wide range of climate zones the highway passes through between the oak-covered hills near Shasta, on Redding's outskirts, and Blue Lake, near the coastal town of Arcata. Along the way, the road climbs through the Shasta-Trinity National Forest and the mountains surrounding Weaverville before descending through Humboldt County's redwood belt toward the Pacific, crossing some of the most climatically varied terrain of any single California highway. Route 299 as a whole is far longer, stretching all the way to the Nevada state line east of Cedarville, but the officially designated Trinity Scenic Byway covers only this western portion. The corridor connects two of Northern California's defining landscapes, inland gold country hills and old-growth coastal redwoods, in one continuous, curving drive through some of the state's least developed country.
