State Scenic Highway 33, the Maricopa Highway, crosses 38 miles of Los Padres National Forest as the Jacinto Reyes National Scenic Byway. Running from the edge of the Ojai Valley to Lockwood Valley Road in Ventura County, the route is both an officially designated State Scenic Highway and a National Forest Scenic Byway, connecting the San Joaquin Valley to coastal Southern California through the Ojai and Mt. Pinos Ranger Districts. The corridor provides access to four federally designated wilderness areas, the Sespe, Matilija, Chumash, and Dick Smith, and passes close encounters with sandstone cliffs, rock formations, and riparian creek crossings alongside sweeping mountain vistas. Bordered by roughly 30 miles of national forest land and just seven miles of private property, the highway retains an undeveloped character rare this close to the Los Angeles metro area. It's a winding, two-lane mountain drive with few services, better suited to a deliberate scenic outing than a fast commute between the valley and the coast.
