State Scenic Highway 37 runs 21 miles along San Pablo Bay's northern shore, linking Marin, Sonoma, and Solano counties across restored wetlands. The highway connects US 101 in Novato to Interstate 80 in Vallejo, passing directly alongside San Pablo Bay's tidal and seasonal marshes, key habitat for migratory birds along the Pacific Flyway. Near Sears Point, the Sonoma Land Trust purchased 2,327 acres of former ranchland in 2005 for an $18 million wetland restoration project, one of the most ambitious tidal marsh recoveries in California, which incorporated a 2.5-mile stretch of the Bay Trail so visitors can walk the new habitat levees. The highway itself is eligible for California's State Scenic Highway System but has not completed official designation, running low and flat with wide-open bay views in every direction rather than the forest or mountain scenery typical of the state's other scenic routes. It's as much a wildlife-viewing corridor as a road, especially for waterfowl in winter.
