State Scenic Highway 62, the Twentynine Palms Highway, has carried an official California scenic designation since September 1972. The designated stretch covers its western nine miles, from Interstate 10 near White Water to the Riverside-San Bernardino county line. The full route cuts through the Little San Bernardino Mountains and the High Desert towns of Morongo Valley, Yucca Valley, Joshua Tree, and Twentynine Palms, running along the northern boundary of Joshua Tree National Park for much of its length. It's also recognized as a Blue Star Memorial Highway between I-10 and Adobe Road. Much of the eastern half of the route, beyond State Route 177, was originally built by the Metropolitan Water District as a service road for the Colorado River Aqueduct.
