State Scenic Highway 75 follows the Silver Strand, a narrow sandbar between the Pacific Ocean and San Diego Bay. Its Coronado Bay Bridge segment has carried an official California scenic designation since 1970. The 13-mile route starts near Imperial Beach, runs north past Silver Strand State Beach and through the United States Naval Amphibious Base, then becomes Orange Avenue through the city of Coronado. It ends by climbing onto the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge, opened in 1969, which carries the highway back across the bay to join Interstate 5 near downtown. The original Silver Strand Highway opened to traffic in 1924, decades before the bridge replaced the ferries that once made the crossing.
