State Scenic Highway 91, the Riverside Freeway through Santa Ana Canyon, has carried an official California scenic designation since November 15, 1971. The designated stretch runs from State Route 55 in Anaheim toward Corona. The freeway follows the Santa Ana River through the canyon, with riparian woodland along the riverbed and chaparral-covered hillsides rising on either side, a green corridor squeezed between two of Southern California's densest counties. Despite the scenic designation, this stretch of SR 91 is also one of the most congested commuter corridors in the region, carrying traffic between the Inland Empire and Orange County job centers throughout the day.
