State Scenic Highway 94 twists roughly 70 miles through the rural backcountry of San Diego County as Campo Road. It's eligible for California's scenic highway program but not officially designated by Caltrans. East of the city, the route rolls through hills that turn bright green in spring and brown by summer, passing tiny settlements with names like Dogpatch and Cameron Corners. Along the way it reaches Japatul Valley, home to the Lions, Tigers & Bears exotic animal sanctuary, then Campo, where the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum runs historic excursion trains most weekends, before ending near Jacumba Hot Springs, a small high-desert community built around its namesake hot springs resort close to the Mexican border.
