The Trinity Heritage Scenic Byway is a 120-mile U.S. Forest Service byway tracing Highway 3 through far northern California along a historic Oregon-California trade route. It climbs from about 2,000 to 6,500 feet, running south from Montague in Siskiyou County through the Scott River Valley and over Scott Mountain Summit into Trinity County, past the Trinity Alps, Trinity Lake, and a loop through the former mining town of Lewiston, before reaching the county seat of Weaverville and continuing south through Hayfork to its end at Highway 36. Unlike the shorter, more heavily traveled Highway 3 segment around Weaverville and Hayfork itself, this byway's throughline is the 19th-century trade and travel corridor linking Trinity County miners and settlers to Oregon-bound routes north of Scott Mountain. Lewiston Lake, Trinity Lake, and long stretches of the Trinity River provide fishing and boating along the way, and the route is a quieter, less-developed counterpart to Highway 3's more scenic-highway-branded southern stretches.
