The Flat Tops Trail crosses the high, broad plateau of the White River Plateau between Yampa and Meeker, much of it on graded gravel. It skirts the Flat Tops Wilderness and Trappers Lake, the place that helped inspire the modern wilderness movement in the 1920s. The route runs through volcanic-capped mesas, spruce forest, and open parks rich in elk.
