Connecticut's Route 49 and Route 14A byway winds about 22 miles through the Pachaug State Forest in the state's rural, sparsely populated northeast corner. The route starts near the Rhode Island line in North Stonington, cuts through the forest's pine barrens and hemlock ravines past Green Falls Pond and Mount Misery, and continues through the crossroads village of Voluntown before ending at Route 14A's junction with Route 14 in the Sterling Hill Historic District. Pachaug is Connecticut's largest state forest, and the drive is prized locally for fall foliage, quiet two-lane pavement, and access to hiking trails, campgrounds, and the Rhododendron Sanctuary rather than any single landmark town. It's a lower-profile pick than Connecticut's two National Scenic Byways, Route 169 and the Merritt Parkway; Route 49/14A instead went through a state corridor management planning process recognizing it as a scenic road.
