Delaware Route 9 follows the marshy shore of Delaware Bay south from New Castle, a quiet route through tidal wetlands, wildlife refuges, and small fishing and farming villages. The Bombay Hook and other refuges along the way are major stops on the Atlantic Flyway, crowded with shorebirds and waterfowl in migration. It is a low, watery landscape far removed from the nearby interstate.
