A1A Ocean Islands Trail is a 40-mile scenic drive along Florida's Atlantic coast, running from Fernandina Beach south to Jacksonville Beach. Designated a Florida Scenic Highway by the state Department of Transportation, the route follows State Road A1A through Nassau and Duval counties, crossing the Nassau River before reaching its signature feature: the Mayport Ferry, which carries cars across the mouth of the St. Johns River and makes this the only Florida scenic highway that includes a ferry crossing as part of the drive. South of the river, A1A continues through the beach towns of Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach, and Jacksonville Beach, each with its own stretch of public sand and small-town character. The corridor mixes barrier-island ecology, from coastal dunes to salt marsh, with a long military and maritime history tied to the St. Johns River's mouth at Mayport Naval Station. It's a compact but varied coastal drive, best paired with time on the ferry itself rather than treated as a fast through-route between Georgia and Jacksonville.
