William Bartram Scenic & Historic Highway is a 17-mile stretch of Florida State Road 13 along the east bank of the St. Johns River, named for the 18th-century naturalist William Bartram, who documented the region's plant and animal life during his travels through colonial Florida. The route runs from the Julington Creek Bridge south to around Ward's Creek near State Road 16, just southwest of Jacksonville, and is easily reached from I-95 via I-295 West. Along the drive, oak-canopied stretches of SR 13 open periodically onto river views, with old homesteads, small historic markers, and access points to the St. Johns breaking up the tree cover. It's a state-designated Florida Scenic Highway rather than a long-distance route, so most visitors drive it as a scenic detour rather than a destination trip on its own, often combined with a stop at one of the river access points Bartram himself would have passed on his 18th-century travels through the area.
