Indian River Lagoon - Treasure Coast Scenic Highway follows State Road A1A and US 1 along Florida's Treasure Coast. The Federal Highway Administration designated it a National Scenic Byway in 2021. The route runs between sandy Atlantic dunes and the mangrove-lined banks of the Indian River Lagoon, a 156-mile estuary that scientists consider the most biologically diverse in North America, home to more than 4,000 plant and animal species, including some 50 that are threatened or endangered. Manatees, dolphins, and hundreds of bird species share the lagoon with sport fishing and boating communities strung along the highway's length, making the drive as much a wildlife-viewing corridor as a coastal scenic route.
