Old Florida Heritage Highway runs 48 miles along US 441 just south of Gainesville, with spur roads on County Roads 34 and 18. Both radiate from the historic town of Micanopy. Settled in 1821 as Wanton's Town, Micanopy is Florida's oldest inland town and today sits on the National Register of Historic Places, looking much as it did generations ago. The route skirts Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park and passes through Rochelle, Evinston, and Cross Creek, home to Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Historic State Park, where the Pulitzer Prize-winning author lived and wrote The Yearling between 1928 and 1953. Rural stretches on County Roads 325 and 346 double as winter viewing grounds for migrating sandhill cranes and resident bald eagles.
