Palma Sola Scenic Highway runs 4.5 miles of State Road 64, Manatee Avenue West, from 75th Street West in Bradenton out to East Bay Drive on Anna Maria Island. The causeway crosses Palma Sola Bay, a calm, protected body of water between the mainland and the barrier islands, with water visible on both sides of the road for most of the drive. The highway takes its name from a single palm tree that once stood near the beach at Holmes Beach, Palma Sola meaning solitary palm, which sailors used for generations to navigate into Anna Maria Sound and the bay. Picnic areas and access points along the causeway support fishing, sailing, water skiing, and jet skiing.
