Pensacola Scenic Bluffs Highway follows 11 miles of U.S. 90 from the Bayou Texar Bridge to the Escambia River Bridge. It became Florida's first designated scenic highway in 1998. The route runs atop red clay bluffs overlooking Escambia Bay, among the highest points anywhere along Florida's coastline, giving drivers open water views uncommon on the state's mostly flat coast. Toward its northern end the highway drops into tidal wetlands that support a wide range of birds and other wildlife before crossing the Escambia River. As the state's original scenic highway, it helped set the template that dozens of later Florida byways would follow.
