The Tamiami Trail (US-41) was the first road to cross the Everglades, cutting straight across the "river of grass" between Miami and the Gulf coast. Today it runs past Everglades and Big Cypress preserves, with alligators basking in the roadside canal and wading birds working the sawgrass marsh. The Shark Valley and Miccosukee stops offer a closer look at the wetland wilderness.
