The Historic Effingham-Ebenezer Scenic Byway runs 60 miles through Guyton, Springfield, and Rincon in coastal Georgia, tracing the history of one of the state's eight original counties. The route centers on Ebenezer, a community founded in the 1730s by German Lutherans, the Salzburgers, fleeing religious persecution in Europe, and it touches George Washington's 1791 Southern tour, Revolutionary War-era tavern sites, historic Savannah River ferry crossings, and part of General Sherman's Civil War March to the Sea. Ebenezer Creek, both a state-designated Scenic River and a National Natural Landmark, offers a 12.4-mile out-and-back paddling route with a gentle current well suited to beginner kayakers and paddleboarders, with a put-in at Long Bridge Road near Rincon. The University of Georgia's Forest Education Center sits along the byway as well, adding an environmental-education stop to the historical route. It's a layered drive combining colonial religious history, Revolutionary and Civil War sites, and quiet blackwater paddling.
