The Millen-Jenkins County Scenic Byway is a 30-mile loop in southeast Georgia, starting on Cotton Avenue in Millen's National Register-listed historic district. From there it runs north on State Route 23, cuts through county backroads, and returns on State Route 17. Narrow roadways pass beneath tunnels of overhanging trees on some stretches and open out into wide farmland on others, with most of the historic buildings along the route, including the ornate 1910 Jenkins County Courthouse, dating from Millen's boom years between 1880 and 1930. Several historic churches sit along the loop, among them Big Buckhead Baptist Church, the third-oldest Baptist congregation in Georgia, and the byway also passes Magnolia Springs State Park and the site of Camp Lawton, a short-lived Confederate prison camp. The Millen-Jenkins Museum, housed in an early-1900s railroad depot, displays Native American artifacts and cotton-mill era tools from the county's past. It's a compact loop that packs a wide range of local history into a half-day drive.
