The Monticello Crossroads Scenic Byway is a 29-mile Georgia scenic route through Jasper County, following State Highways 11 and 83 north out of the city of Monticello. The road crosses pine forest and hilly agricultural land dotted with pastures, pecan groves, and rolling grassland, following corridors first used by Native American traders and, later, Methodist circuit-riding evangelists covering rural congregations on horseback. Highway 83 carries an additional layer of history as part of the old Seven Island Stagecoach Road, a route that once ran from Augusta all the way to New Orleans and connected with the Natchez Trace. The byway passes through the Monticello Historic District, home to numerous buildings on the National Register of Historic Places, giving the small county seat an outsized architectural presence relative to its size. It's a quiet, unhurried drive through central Georgia farm country with several centuries of transportation history layered into a single road.
