The South Fulton Scenic Byway is a 29-mile loop through rural south Fulton County, the first road adopted into Georgia's scenic byway program when it was designated on October 7, 1998. Following Cochran Mill Road, Hutcheson Ferry Road, and Campbellton-Redwine Road, the loop passes rolling hills, forested ridges, open pasture, and small ponds in one of the last stretches of undeveloped countryside inside the Atlanta metro area, a deliberate contrast to the suburban sprawl surrounding it on nearly every side. Cochran Mill Park and its adjoining nature center sit along the route, offering hiking trails and access to the nearby Chattahoochee River, while the byway's farmhouses and small historic communities preserve a rural character increasingly rare this close to downtown Atlanta. Roadside wildflowers and quiet streams add to the drive's appeal for horseback riders, joggers, and hikers as much as motorists. As Georgia's original scenic byway, it set the template the state's other 17 or so designated routes have followed since.
